How the chart is built
One block per asset
Each asset you add gets the same eight rows. Type the opening balance against the asset name in the first year only - every later year opens at the written-down value the chart carried forward.
- Opening: the asset name row, editable in the first year.
- During the Year: additions, split by the 180-day rule or by date.
- Total: opening plus additions, before depreciation.
- Less Depreciation: the charge the method works out.
- Adjust (Dep) (Add/Less): your own correction, positive or negative.
- Written down value: what carries into next year.
The four methods
Block (Income Tax - 180 days)
Full rate on the opening block and on additions held 180 days or more, half rate on the rest. Written-down value basis, no residual floor.
Companies Act - Straight Line (SLM)
(Cost - Residual) / Useful Life
Enter useful life in years and the residual percentage instead of a rate. Additions are charged from the date they are put to use.
Companies Act - Written Down Value (WDV)
Rate = 1 - (Residual / Cost) ^ (1 / Useful Life)
The same inputs as SLM, charged on the reducing balance and floored at the residual value.
Pro-Rata (day-wise)
Every addition is entered with its date and depreciated for the part of the year it was actually held.
Companies Act vs. Income Tax Act
| Feature | Companies Act 2013 | Income Tax Act 1961 |
|---|---|---|
| Basis | Useful life of the asset | Blocks of assets (percentage rate) |
| Part-year assets | Pro-rata from the date put to use | Half rate if held under 180 days |
| Residual value | Generally 5% of cost | Nil |
| Methods | SLM or WDV | Mainly WDV |
Frequently Asked Questions
Which depreciation methods does this chart support?
Four: Block (Income Tax, 180-day rule), Companies Act Straight Line (SLM), Companies Act Written Down Value (WDV) and Pro-Rata day-wise from the date of purchase. Switch between them under Settings and the whole chart recalculates.
How do I enter assets bought during the year?
Under the Income Tax block method, type the additions into the two 'During the Year' rows - one for assets held 180 days or more, one for the rest. Under the Companies Act and pro-rata methods, click the 'Total During the Year' cell and enter each purchase with its date; the chart works out the split and the part-year charge for you.
What is the 'Adjust (Dep) (Add/Less)' row for?
It adds to or subtracts from the depreciation the chart has worked out, for a figure you need to match an audited account. It is the one editable row that accepts a negative number.
Can I enter depreciation figures myself instead?
Yes. Tick 'Use Custom Depreciation' under Settings and the chart becomes a five-row manual entry sheet - fixed assets, additions during the year, depreciation, adjustment and the written-down value it computes.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. The chart is saved in your own browser's local storage and never leaves your device. Clearing your browser data clears the chart.
Is this the same chart used in Finxora reports?
Yes. The CMA report, project report and balance sheet modules render this exact chart and calculation engine, so a figure worked out here is the figure those reports would carry.
